« Second edition of the text of 1595, given by Mlle de Gournay. It is of the utmost rarity and onteresting because of the new foreword (here in first edition) where Mlle Gournay refutes the one of 1595 » (Tchemerzine).
Montaigne died September 13th 1592. The edition of the Essais given in 1595 by Mademoiselle de Gournay, « the adopted daugher » of Montaigne was based on the copy of the Essais announced by Montaigne and on the manuscripts left on the writer desk.
« Cette édition shows the short foreword by Marie de Gournay for the first time. A lot of mistakes were correxcted in this edition of a more manageable format than the editions of 1588 (4°) and 1595 (folio). Almost all the 17th century editions would be based on this edition » (Philippe Desan).
« From sketches to corrections, from remorse to precision, Montaigne elaborates one of the masterpieces of the human spirit » (En français dans le texte).
An attractive wide-margined copy preserved in its first overlapping vellum.
