Du Bellay (1522-1560) met Ronsard in 1547. From that day dates his poetical calling.

Fourth edition – the first one was in 1549 -, but the first 4to edition and first edition of this text enlarged with the Musagnoeomachie, to which we must add the other texts by Du Bellay, which Tchemerzine described under separate numbers.

As noted by G. Lanson, “Du Bellay preceded Ronsard”. He is the author of an abundant, diversified and always innovative poetical work ; he was the first to compose French love sonnets, to create a collection of lyrical odes ; he decisively expanded the register of the sonnet, became one of the greatest neo-Latin poets of Europe and then transformed into a political poet of major importance. He was not Ronsard’ brilliant second : he was one of the greatest French poets, one of the most innovative.” (Dictionnaire des Lettres françaises, p. 388)

“We consider Du Bellay to be one of the most beautiful treasures of his century. A reputation that is completely justified. Through his sensitivity as well as his pessimism, Joachim Du Bellay introduces into French poetry a new source of inspiration and, in that regard, can be considered as an ancestor of the Romantics.” (R. Purnal)

A superb and precious copy reuniting separate pieces by Joachim Du Bellay published by Frédéric Morel in 4to format.

This collection contains the most important works of the author, who had just died, and includes some very rare texts ; some are unpublished, some are firsts in 4to format.

A great poetic work, gorgeously bound in a richly decorated morocco with mosaics and friezes by Chambolle-Duru in the spirit of the bindings of the Renaissance.
