« Gatsby le Magnifique » est l’histoire d’un jeune Américain qui, pauvre au sortir de la première grande guerre, revient immensément riche. L’éclat de sa réussite n’aura d’égale que la soudaineté de sa chute. Il a aimé Daisy, une héritière de 18 ans. Elle l’a sans doute aussi aimé, mais n’a pu l’attendre et s’est mariée avec un héritier.
Dans sa luxueuse propriété de Long Island, Gatsby reçoit toute la haute société de New York pour qui rien ne compte que le dollar.
Sa fortune aura la durée d’un météore, il mourra assassiné par Tom Buchanan, le mari de Daisy, et ne sera pleuré par personne. « Gatsby le magnifique » est la satire mordante de l’égoïsme de certaine société américaine fondée exclusivement sur l’argent. On y reconnait l’amertume de Fitzgerald qui fut, après la Première Guerre mondiale le porte-parole de la « génération perdue ».

Fitzgerald also focused on the complications of romantic relationships, his own larriage inspiring much of his writing. The Great Gatsby was published in 1925. The novel is focused on life in Long Island, New York, during the 1920s, the period before the stock market crash, the Great Depression and World War II. Underneath the story runs a social commentary about the elitism of the American upper class” (Robert Weir).
