“His (...) travels in Brazil and the East Indies appeared posthumously in 1682, edited from his notes and papers by his brother Hendrik. Both volumes were lavishly produced and bore engravings taken Nieuhof’s sketches" (Howgego).

Exemplaire de grand luxe, avec le superbe frontispice enluminé à l’époque, imprimé sur papier de Hollande, conservé dans sa belle reliure de l’époque en vélin ivoire estampé à froid.

« The author lived nine years (1640-49) in Brazil in the service of the Dutch West India Company. The account of Brazil contains many precious documents, and includes the history of Brazil from its first discovery by the Portuguese, both civil and ecclesiastical. See Trömel’s « Bibliothèque Américaine », n°385. The second work contains also a small poem of Jacob Steedam, the first poet of New Netherland « Op de stad Batavia » dated : « Batavia dem 24. Van Wijnmaand 1670 ».

« First edition of this richly illustrated account of the East Indies and Brazil. Nieuhoff’s Zee en Lant-Reize icludes one of the largest and best illustrated 17th-century descriptions of Batavia, now Jakarta, and is an important source for Dutch colonial architecture. Nieuhoff’s account of his long stay in Brazil also includes descriptions of the West Indies, and « is very valuable indeed, being richly documented from the original sources and reproducting much of the official correspondence between the local Dutch and Portuguese authorities » (Boxer).

Nieuhoff also gives an eye-witness account of the 1646 siege of Recife.

The present copy includes the plate showing St Anthony and St Vincent villages in the East Indies volume which is omitted in the directions to the binder, and does not appear in all copies.
