Bernoulli, Daniel. Exercitationes quardam mathematicae.

Venetiis, Dominicum Lovisam, 1724.

Rare first edition of Bernoulli's first published volume which served to establish his reputation at the age of 24.

It contains 1 folding plate with 9 figures.

Riccardi, II, 360.

As a result of the success of this early treatise, Bernoulli was appointed to the Academy of Sciences in St Petersburg.

« This treatise deals with the outflow of water from the opening of containers and the lunulae and solutions to a number of contemporary geometrical and algebraic problems, including that of Riccati’s differential equations. It also contains an early dissertation on the game of faro » (D.S.B. II, pp. 37 e 42).

Bernoulli (1700-1782) records his disputes with a number of contemporary mathematicians (such as Riccati and Montmort).

In Padua Daniel Bernoulli turned his attention to mathematics; his first interests were differential equations and questions concerning calculus of probability. Parts of this work were collected in a volume printed in Venice in 1724. This brought him quite a bit of fame, so much that the Republic of Genoa offered him the presidency of its newly re-established Academy” (D. Speiser, Discovering the Principles of Mechanics 1600-1800).

Like Newton, whose battle he fought on the Continent, Bernoulli was first and foremost a physicist, using mathematics primarily as a means of exploring reality as it was revealed through experimentation” (DSB).

« Une solution de l’équation célèbre de Ricati, qu’on trouve dans ce recueil, plaça le jeune Daniel Bernoulli au nombre des géomètres inventeurs. Ces dissertations, imprimées en Italie, parurent avec une approbation de l’inquisiteur. Une telle cérémonie, nécessaire alors dans toute cette partie de l’Europe, excepté à Naples, dut paraître bizarre à un géomètre né libre et protestant » (Condorcet).

A very desirable wide margined copy kept in its contemporary boards, as issued.

Très bel exemplaire, entièrement non rogné, conservé dans son cartonnage d’attente du temps, tel que paru.
