Superbe ouvrage orné de 79 lithographies signées en couleur à pleine page par Walter Hood Fitch et James Andrews.

Première édition de la première et seconde série de cet ouvrage magnifique consacré aux orchidées présentant de nouvelles espèces d’orchidées récemment introduites en Europe ainsi que leur culture.

L’ouvrage eut un réel succès et une troisième série fut produite de 1877 à 1891.

Sir Joseph Hooker, dit Fitch, doit être selon toute vraisemblance considéré comme le plus célèbre illustrateur d’orchidées.

L’ensemble de ces 79 superbes lithographies de grand format imprimées en couleur puis rehaussées d’aquarelle constitue un hymne vibrant à la beauté captivante et énigmatique des orchidées.

The aims of the authors are laid out in the introduction : the huge expansion in the number of varieties of orchid reaching the temperate regions meant that a process of selection was required to bring to the attention of the amateur enthusiast the "new and beautiful varieties of the more ornamental of the species already known… [as well as] new ones which outvie the most lovely of those of the olden time". With this in mind, as well as the fact that a large scale folio work was necessary to do justice to the genus, they undertook the publishing of a work that was "designed to present to the lovers of orchids with portraits of the most beautiful among the cultivated forms of this remarkable race of plants." (Introduction).

With lovely illustrations by a distinguished botanical artist attached to Kew Gardens, these two volumes comprise a first and second series of works celebrating the exotic orchid family, flowers that enjoyed a particular vogue (and inspired a number of publications) among British gardeners of the Victorian period.

"Many of the plates in the first series and all of the plates in the second series were done by the noted botanical illustrator Walter Hood Fitch (1817-92), called by Blunt & Stearn "the most outstanding botanical artist of his day in Europe." ("The Art of Botanical Illustration", p. 265)
